This brief analyzes Europe's financial challenges and problems of legitimacy surrounding its institutions. Specifically, it highlights Europe's structural imbalances, the weaknesses of the southern economies, and the lack of real capability of governments to confront corporations and financial markets. The author argues that, ultimately, Europe finds itself at a crossroads: it can either take action to foster a stronger political and democratic union or it can fall over and disintegrate.
