This article argues that the greatest challenge that the new Pakistani government faces concerns the inability of the country's army to meet internal security challenges effectively. The author examines Pakistan's counter-insurgency campaign, peace talks between the military and the Taliban, and army deployments. He concludes that there can never be a purely military or a purely political solution to insurgency and claims that Pakistan's army needs to address the doctrinal, structural and organizational issues that are hampering its efforts.
