This paper outlines the rationale behind the United States' pivot to the Asia-Pacific region and how it has been viewed by China. The author argues that while policymakers and scholars greeted the pivot with skepticism, China nevertheless redoubled its efforts to improve Sino-US relations. With this in mind, the author further argues Beijing and Washington should look to increase cooperation on common interests in order to better manage the more contentious aspects of US-China relations.
