This article discusses patriarchy, gender equality and the role of women in Ladakh, India. The author examines the socio-cultural structures and the role of religion with regard to the institutionalization of patriarchy in the region. He concludes that though the status of women is relatively better in Ladakh than in other parts of India, women in Ladakh are still controlled by patriarchal forces and therefore much needs to be done for gender equality.
