This article analyzes the gradual opening of India's Ladakh region since the 1970s and the impact this has had on culture, internal migration, and the relationship between locals and the tourist industry. The author concludes that commodification of culture and religion is an integral part of tourism with both positive and negative consequences for both tourists and locals.
