This practice note looks at the benefits of integrating gender issues into defense reform as part of wider Security Sector Reform (SSR) and provides practical information on how to do this. It uses case studies to illustrate the participation of women in the Hungarian Armed Forces as well as Ghana’s rules regarding the sexual conduct of its armed and security forces while on peace keeping operations.
