This practice note looks at the benefits of integrating gender issues into parliamentary oversight of the security sector and provides practical information on how to do this. It argues that integration of gender issues is key to the effectiveness and accountability of the security sector and local ownership. To illustrate, the note highlights cases of participatory and gender responsive security policies in South Africa, equal representation in security policy decision-making in Israel, and implementation of institutional quotas in Afghanistan and Iraq.
