This paper uses the example of the 2008 earthquake in Sichuan, China, to examine the link between one form of social capital -- formal and informal networking -- and disaster recovery. It concludes that having large and functional networks not only increased the amount of government aid Sichuan received for housing reconstruction, they also increased the monetary and material support received from other individuals.
