This paper examines Syria's economy before and during the civil war. The author argues that without food imports and aid, Syria would be facing famine today. He then argues that economic recovery, not military victory of whatever side, is crucial for a sustainable political solution and that the energy sector, tourism and agriculture would need to be a focus of any reconstruction efforts.
