This paper looks at the challenges of expanding wind and solar power (WSP) in South Africa, and other countries. It argues that well-designed deployment strategies, as well as low-cost open source data and software can help minimize costs, maximize benefits, and ensure reliability. The author concludes that this approach could help guide long-term infrastructure planning as countries prepare to scale up WSP.
