This brief explores the challenges and opportunities for redefining the role of civil society in supporting democratic transition in the Arab region. It also analyzes how to identify, connect and use regional capacities to address local challenges and maintain the momentum of the popular call for democracy. Suggestions include creating more transparent civil society–state actor partnerships, improving communication between civil society groups and providing an accessible forum for interaction, as well as being aware of cultural factors specific to the Arab region.
