This paper argues that it is necessary to take the symbolic status of nuclear weapons as icons of power into consideration in nonproliferation efforts. To further his point, the author outlines the symbolic nature of nuclear weapons, as well as other iconic weapons of power from the past, and looks at the decisions made by states regarding the building or giving up of nuclear weapons.
