This brief examines the mounting sectarian tension in the Middle East. The author believes that while events in Syria have stirred pent-up frustrations across the region, the real culprits behind rising sectarianism are: a dearth of inclusive government institutions, discrimination in educational establishments, a lack of civil society, uneven economic development, and the influence of social media.
