This paper discusses the United Kingdom’s euroscepticism and how it might lead to the country exiting the European Union. More specifically, the author looks at the historical tensions between the UK and the EU; Prime Minister David Cameron’s plans for a plebiscite on British EU membership; and how the UK economy and the referendum on Scottish independence will have a major part to play in the UK’s longer term relationship with Europe. He concludes by showing how political events may affect the UK’s relationship with Europe through two scenarios.
