This brief talks about the inclusion of gender perspectives and UN Security Council resolution 1326 on Women, Peace and Security in peace operations in Africa. First, it examines the distribution of women and men in UN operations in Africa. Second, it looks at the issue of ‘gender mainstreaming’ and the use of gender units to ensure that gender perspectives are included in peace operations. Finally, the paper examines the core mandate of these operations and gender perceptions related to the areas connected to it, namely military presence and state restoration in war-torn countries. The author argues that while these areas are largely perceived as non-gendered, they are in fact male-dominated fields.
