This brief analyzes the crisis in South Sudan and strategies for building lasting peace in the country. The authors argue that negotiations for peace should be guided by three principles: 1) there is no returning to the previous status quo; 2) negotiations should go beyond the political elites and armed fighters to include citizens; and 3) the international community must play an active role.
