This article examines the major problems and prospects of the Egyptian Journalist Syndicate, Egypt’s only official journalist union, since the outbreak of the revolution in 2011. Through interviews with syndicate members and media observers, the author demonstrates that while there generally is an open discussion about the need for change, efforts to reform the syndicate remain blocked by the political and economic climate in the country.
