This paper examines the advantages of using median household consumption expenditure (or income) per capita as a way to measure the material well-being, as well as changes in well-being, of people in developing countries. By comparing it to other commonly used measures of material well-being at the national level, the authors argue that this measure has a number of advantages and that it therefore should be incorporated into standard development indicators.
