This paper analyzes Basotho public opinion in Lesotho on the freedom of the press, democracy - including its institutions and its alternatives - and the country's government. The authors find that a small majority of Basotho support freedom of speech and press. However, there is a sizable segment of the population, which also wants the freedom of press controlled to some extent. They also say that the Basotho express a significant amount of support for democracy and that they want the coalition government elected in 2012 to respect the rule of law and support the functioning of all the democratic institutions in the country.
