This brief reflects on the 50 year tenure of the African Union, focusing on the Union's achievements and future prospects. It argues that while the AU has not succeeded in becoming the pivot of the African political agenda, its effect on peace and security in Africa has nevertheless been positive. In order to address the continent’s future challenges, the authors suggest that African leaders commit to regional integration by ceding more sovereignty to regional and continental institutions.
