This paper examines the outward urban expansion of five major Indian cities: Patna, Guwahati, Chandigarh, Chennai and Ahmedabad. The authors assess the major challenges and implications of this expansion for the peripheries of these cities, reviewing above all their transport, waste, and governance situations. They conclude that the peripheries have grown beyond capacity and lack infrastructure and development capabilities to absorb further growth.
