This paper examines how commodity price shocks drive maize producers in Mexico to plant drug crops, particularly marijuana and opium poppies. Such economically-driven behavior, the paper concludes, reminds us yet again that we continue to lack a comprehensive understanding of the economic determinants behind the narcotics trade.
