This brief explores the relationship between public support for democracy, institutionalized democratic institutions and the existence of chieftainship (bogosi)as a social and political institution in Botswana. According to the author, Botswana's stable support for democracy derives from the blending and balancing between republican and traditional systems of governance, as well as the strengthening of democratic institutions in the country.
