This brief examines India’s growing strategic interests in East Asia and discusses the future contours of the country’s relations with South Korea, North Korea, and Japan. The author argues that to pursue its national interest, India needs to explore, build, and nurture issue-based partnerships rather than across-the-board strategic understandings with any particular country on all issues of concern. He also suggests that in order to influence the security architecture in East Asia, India should act in concert with other like-minded countries, such as South Korea and Japan, and that all three should harmonize their positions on regional policies.
