This brief discusses the upcoming April 2014 presidential election in Afghanistan and its potential to provide a political resolution to some of the country's many problems. To do this, the author looks at the country's previous elections, paying particular attention to the 2009 election. He argues that despite the past divergence between Afghan and international views on what elections can accomplish, with more realistic expectations, the 2014 elections could offer the Afghans a final chance to rescue themselves from the countries perennial crisis.
