This paper argues that as a result of environmental changes the Arctic will grow increasingly important for United States’ security and economic interests. The authors review environmental changes in the region, and threats and opportunities associated with them in four key areas: security, economy, society and ecology. They contend that the United States should adopt a leadership position among Arctic states, and offer policy recommendations on how to achieve this through promoting a more tangible presence, greater investments and a more active regional posture.
