This brief analyzes India-Maldives bilateral relations and offers policy recommendations for the newly elected Indian government on how to improve these links. The author first reviews India's main concerns regarding the Maldives: democratic instability, rising antagonisms towards Indian investments, and the growing influence of Islamic radicalism and China in the Maldives. He then goes on to list India’s interests in the Maldives and comment on the leverages New Delhi can exercise to protect them. He concludes by highlighting the importance of Maldives for Indian interests and outlining possible courses of action.
