This paper discusses the dilemma between the responsibility to protect people from their own governments and state sovereignty within the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) framework. The author explains that the complexities of international interference often mean that finding the appropriate level of protective measures can be difficult and that the politics of protection will continue to reflect these dilemmas. However, he also contends that the R2P resolution does provide a normative framework within which the inconsistencies of the politics of protection can be addressed in a constructive way.
