This brief addresses the need for African economies to diversify away from resource extraction in order to reach a sustainable development economic model and the challenges the face in doing so. More specifically, the author looks at the relationship between mining governance and industrial development in South Africa and finds that a context-specific understanding of the incentive structures by institutions and their policies are a prerequisite for the success of governance initiatives that aim to optimize a country’s natural resource wealth.
