This note discusses the economic and political implications of the 2013/14 Ukraine crisis for countries in the Middle East. More specifically, the author reviews the impact of the crisis in Ukraine on: 1) economic threats linked to changes in oil prices and lower levels of trade between the Middle East and Russia as well as Ukraine; 2) economic opportunities for Middle Eastern countries, mainly as alternative sources of energy supplies for Europe; and 3) political threats associated to raising concerns about western security guarantees in the Middle East as well as attempts by Syria, Iran and Egypt to take advantage of global power rivalries.
