This brief examines the extent to which South Africa has used its economic clout to influence the political situation in Swaziland since 1994. To do this, the author appraises South Africa's foreign policy and economic diplomacy toward Swaziland, including how Pretoria engages with Swaziland regional institutions such as the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the Southern African Customs Union (SACU). He also provides some recommendations for South Africa on how it can influence the political and economic situation in Swaziland to help bring about necessary reforms.
