This paper examines how research on migration and development has changed since the 1970s. The authors argue that there have been two major changes, the first being that research in this area has significantly increased and that it has developed into a recognizable subfield within development research. The second significant change is that research in this subfield has broadened out from a position where it primarily concentrated on rural-urban migration and international remittances to one where it considers a range of international development processes.
