This paper examines the importance of maintaining healthy ecosystems in Africa for sustainable development there. The author also looks at some of the tools that decision makers on the continent can use to reconcile rapid economic growth in Africa - which has led to the destruction of natural habitats through such factors as population growth, agricultural expansion, and natural resource exploitation - with the sustainable management of ecosystems.
