This paper analyzes an experiment of a mobile phone-based adult education program in Los Angeles. The authors find that the program increased adult students’ basic reading scores, as well as their self-esteem over a four-month period. They also contend that the results suggest that information and communication technologies hold great potential for improving educational skills in illiterate adults.
