Jul 2014

This note outlines the major challenges Indonesia will face in the wake of its 9 July 2014 presidential elections. In doing so, it first reviews the legacy of President Yudhoyono’s government (2004-2014), which seemingly advanced the country's stability but failed to embark on major political or economic reforms. The note then looks to the future and highlights four problems that the new government will need to address – 1) supervising and managing the country's regions; 2) redistributing wealth; 3) attracting domestic and foreign investment; and 4) developing a clear and consistent foreign policy, including within ASEAN.
