This brief discusses the conflicts in Iraq and Syria in 2014 and what these could mean for Indian foreign policy. The author first addresses the causes and potential consequences of the takeover of Sunni dominated provinces in Iraq by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), as well as the steps necessary to address this situation. He then provides an overview of the key actors and developments in the Syrian civil war. Finally, he outlines how he thinks India should respond to both these crises.
