This paper discusses how austerity affects military force planning and strategy in the US, the reasons for the reductions in US national security spending in 2014, as well as how the country has dealt with defense cuts in the past. The author also examines how the US should respond to austerity in defense spending and maintains that as a part this, defense leaders should engage in the debate about austerity, including discussion of fiscal policy and non-defense spending.
