This brief explores the possibility of natural disasters providing an opportunity to build peace, primarily via negotiated settlements. By comparing case studies in Indonesia, Sri Lanka and parts of Africa, the brief highlights the importance of 1) not overlapping negotiations on disaster relief and peace, and 2) relying upon proactive international mediators.
