This note explores how Afghanistan's initially inconclusive 2014 presidential elections created a political crisis in the country. In doing so, it 1) reviews US attempts to broker a deal between the contending presidential candidates, 2) explores the self-interested role President Hamid Karzai played in the crisis, and 3) concludes that the next government, when it is finally installed, will be weaker and less effective than the incumbent one.
