This paper assesses the extent to which residents of developing countries could benefit from the protection of forest ecosystems in order to mitigate climate change. To perform this analysis, the author reviews a set of studies which estimate the value of ecosystem services derived from forests to determine how the well-being of local communities are likely to be affected by the introduction of global mechanisms that attempt to prevent deforestation in developing countries.
