This paper looks at the threat posed by Islamist militants in Tanzania. In particular, the author examines the main Islamist movements active in the country, the evolution of these groups, and the spillover of al Shabab- and al Qaeda–associated threats from Somalia and Kenya. He also provides recommendations for the US on how to counter the threat, suggesting Washington pay more attention to developments in the country, build up Tanzanian capabilities to address the threats it faces, and work with Tanzania and the Zanzibar islands to prevent further radicalization in the country.
