This paper discusses the circumstances under which some Africans pay bribes. Using a multilevel statistical analysis the authors identify contextual differences in colonial legacies, ethnic politicization, service provision, press freedom, and the levels of social or political capital an individual may have, as the most relevant factors dictating whether someone would be inclined to use bribery.
