This brief examines the state of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in Africa. The author suggests that although there is no precise definition of what CSR entails, thinking on the subject is moving beyond philanthropy to demands for the systemic integration of social concerns into business planning. He also states that the application of CSR across Africa is in its infancy and of limited effectiveness before arguing for the encouragement of CSR and corporate social investment across the continent.
