This brief highlights the shift in human rights discourse among African leaders towards a more anti-imperialist rhetoric and the placing of African traditions above human rights and provides examples of how local civil society organizations (CSOs) are challenging this view. The author recommends that, among other things, CSOs should mobilize and work in partnership with international organizations to push for an end to government restrictions and attacks on their work and for greater protection for activists.
