Using case studies of the 2011 protests in Egypt and the 2009 post-election protest in Iran, this paper explores the effect of social media and internet-based communication on social movements. The author examines and compares how computer-mediated communication (CMC) was used in both movements in order to assess whether CMC is most effective in framing a protest movement or organizing it; and to what extent this usage explains the success or failure of these protest movements.
