This commentary discusses the origins of Islamic State's (IS) funding, suggesting that its main sources include oil, ransoms, looting, taxation and donations from abroad. The author also examines how the organization uses food and water provision in the territory it controls and beyond in its strategy. Finally, he looks at how sustainable existing IS revenue sources are and argues that they rely on constant expansion, something that he contends is becoming more difficult for the organization.
