This brief examines trends in the use of illicit drugs in post-WWII Japan. The author illustrates that although Japan experienced three epidemics of drug abuse in 1954, 1981 and 1995, the country is now a role model with the prevalence of drug abuse that is remarkably low compared to most other countries. The author argues that Japan’s experience is a relatively unknown success story that other countries should learn from.
