This report discusses the role of tropical forests in climate change mitigation. The report examines among other things, 1) the scientific basis for the need to maintain and manage tropical forests, 2) the role of forests in the global carbon cycle; 3) how land use and land use changes affect carbon and other greenhouse gas emissions; 4) the relative significance of forest-based emissions in total emissions; 5) existing and projected rates of emissions from deforestation and degradation; and 6) the implications of forest-related policies for mitigation.
