This paper examines the Sino-Japanese relations in light of the first meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit (APEC) in November 2014. The author examines the reasons why China and Japan need to improve their bilateral relations and then argues that in order to start a process of reconciliation both sides must reengage with the spirit of the Treaty of Peace and Friendship which both sides signed in 1978.
