Following the Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the EU's sharp deterioration in overall political relations with Russia, this brief addresses the European energy landscape and the European Union’s energy policy. In particular, the author examines five issues the EU needs to address to ensure its energy security: 1) gas relations between Russia and Ukraine; 2) political relations between the EU and Russia; 3) the EU's dependence on Russian gas; 4) commercial relations between the EU and Russia; and 5) the future EU consumption patterns.
